I grew up in the King’s Charter neighborhood in Hanover County, Virginia, just north of the capital city of Richmond. My parents built a home there for our family just before I entered 8th grade and they still live there today. What’s more, my aunt and uncle also live in the neighborhood. So when I had the opportunity to photograph Erin & Elliott’s wedding at The Manor House, I was thrilled! It was like photographing a wedding in my own backyard!
Erin made an elegant bride in her simple mermaid style dress with chapel length train that she embellished with a jeweled belt. Her veil was made for her by her grandmother. Elliott wore a custom navy suit from Jos. A. Banks that was embroidered inside with their wedding date.
The groomsmen all wore matching navy suits, like Elliott’s, with blush-colored ties — save for Erin’s brother who wore his Marine Corps Dress Blues! The bridesmaids, on the other hand, mixed it up and wore coordinating dresses in a variety of styles and colors that included blush, taupe and soft coral. The matron of honor, Erin’s sister, wore a floral-patterned dress in the same colors.
Before the ceremony, this fun-loving couple and their family members orchestrated a surprise triple “first look”! To start, Erin surprised her dad with his own first look while he thought he was just standing in for some test shots. When he turned and saw her, there were immediate tears! Then we got Elliott in place for his first look with his bride, but when he turned around — surprise! — his mom was there instead! Everyone had a good laugh at that exchange. Finally, Erin was able to greet her groom who quickly pulled her into a sweet embrace.
“E&E” were then married in a late afternoon ceremony by the gazebo at the Manor House as the autumn sun set behind them. After some portraits, it was on to a delicious buffet and a lively dance party inside the historic house!
